Nepal's King Gyanendra will attend the summit of South Asian nations which opens Saturday in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, the national RSS news agency said. He would depart on Friday accompanied by Queen Komal, it announced late Sunday.

It will be the king's first visit overseas as head of the government. He sacked the coalition government in February for failing to control a Maoist insurgency.

The two-day South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (Saarc) summit will also be attended by the leaders of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Saarc was founded in 1985 to forge economic solidarity and boost living standards among the region's 1.4 billion people.
